An output of our recent r&d work to demonstrate how companion apps can link broadcast TV to content on the web. The app is driven by our Second Sync platform.

We are teaming up with web-socket specialists Nomos Media to build a technology platform to drive second screen applications. We are very pleased to have won considerable funding from the Technology Strategy Board to pursue our r&d in this area. Watch this space!

Backflip was commissioned to help BBC Knowledge & Learning develop a strategy for mobile devices.

We produced two prototypes.

The first was a native app for the iPad that showed how flash content could be redeployed on tablet devices using Adobe AIR.

The second was an HTML5 web app to demonstrate how BBC content could be re-written and delivered as cross platform revision cards.

The BBC has taken delivery of these prototypes and accompanying technical reports and is working them into its mobile strategy.

We are very pleased to announce the launch of our education apps business. All our apps can be described as ’simple tools for formal learning’ and are designed to focus on one part of the UK National Curriculum. We are using our flash expertise to create apps for multiple platforms including iOS and Android.

This R&D project is all about visualising BBC data and experimenting with how the audience consumes BBC content. The project has been written about on the BBC Blogs, has featured on infosthetics.com and the Guardian asked us to do a small feature on it. Some of the visualisations have been prominent on the web.

For the past two years we have been working pro bono for Wye Valley Communities for Safe Cycling to help with their campaign to get a cycle path opened from Chepstow to Tintern. This has involved building up a community around the website and using social media to let members know how and when to contact local planning departments. We were very pleased that the Forest of Dean gave planning permission for the project in November 2010. We are still waiting for the Monmouthshire decision.

This flash application allows users to explore additional material associated with the BBC documentary series Virtual Revolution. It uses the native 3d capabilities of the Flash 10 player.

This flash application was an integral part of a website that won both an Bafta and an Emmy.

Produced by Andy Littledale of Backflip for BBC Learning this application allows users to annotate GCSE texts online. It won a Bett award in 2010 in the ‘Tools for learning and teaching’ category.
